中間赤外線観測天文学の国際研究会を開催
中間赤外線による地上天体観測は新しい時代を迎えつつあります。2000年からすばる望遠鏡で運用を続けていた観測装置COMICSは2020年をもって引退する一方、中間赤外線観測装置MIMIZUKUが試験観測に成功、TAOによる観測開始が近づいてきています。また将来の30m望遠鏡用の装置の開発も各地で進行しており、これらを用いた観測計画の検討も進みつつあります。
この状況を鑑み、国際研究会"Mid Infrared Astronomy, Past 20 years and Future 20 years"が2019年8月27日-28日の2日間、国立天文台三鷹にて開催されました。この研究会の主な目的は2点、これまで20年の中間赤外線の歴史や到達点を明らかにすることと、今後20年の研究戦略を検討することです。日本を中心に米国や台湾の研究者が50名参加し (リモートを含む) 、25件の口頭発表が行われました。TAOグループからは宮田が研究会代表 (SOC Chair) を務めたほか、酒向・上塚がSOC/LOCとして参加しました。またTAO/MIMIZUKUの状況について上塚が講演を行いました。
研究会では、TAO/MIMIZUKUは将来の中間赤外線地上観測を担う重要な装置のひとつであることが多くの研究者の間で合意されました。特に中間赤外線で安定的かつ長期にモニタ観測ができるMIMIZUKUの機能は、これまで研究が難しかった天体現象を明らかにするうえで有用であり、太陽系内天体から遠方銀河まで、多くの科学観測が提案されました。また、COMICSでの経験から、MIMIZUKUでも科学観測開始前にサイエンスグループを組織することが重要であるとの指摘もありました。これらについてはMIMIZUKUグループでよく検討し、科学観測準備に活かしたいと思います。
